Shopping For Religion

Ellen Goodman of the Boston Globe seems surprised — or maybe discomfited would be a better word– to learn that Americans these days go shopping for their religion.
She cites a recent study by the Pew Forum that reports that 44% of Americans have left their religion of origin and are presumably currently unaffiliated or out shopping for a better fit. Of course Unitarian Universalists have known this for a long time. The overwhelming majority of Unitarian Universalists are “come-outers” from other faith traditions and have been for decades.
